Native Nuance

Invited into the hearts and homes of the Picuris people.

Huddled by a crackling fire, we sat warming ourselves. As a photographer, this was a dream invitation. As a man, one of my most privileged experiences. Then, as if a quiet wink from something greater, the first snow of the season—and this image.

Beyond aesthetics, beyond generations of gentle and strong, something more compelling emerged for me during these weeks with the tribe.

It is rare for anyone to arrive in front of my lens without performance, or some technique of protection—very rare. Yet, almost every member of the Picuris stood calm and true to themselves. Needing nothing. Projecting nothing.

This nuance speaks to an embodied wisdom.
One worthy of my ongoing attention.

What is it they know?
What can I learn?
