Pride & Grief
Before colonisation, the largest tribe in Northern New Mexico.
Today, fewer than 300 remain.
Invited to spend time with the Picuris people.
It revealed two things, at once.
Pride in how they stand.
Grief in what they carry.
Not one after the other, together.
Same breath. Same eyes.
Love or loss.
Strength or sorrow.
I used to think that a photograph had to choose.
I know now, the honest ones refuse.
